The Cook, The Thief, His Wife And Her Lover is a complicated and humorous love story revolving around the feelings and whims of the beautiful Georgina Spica (Helen Mirren). Georgina’s husband, Albert Spica (Michael Gambon) is an aspiring cook who also is the town’s crime leader, and part owner of the restaurant. His head chef (Richard Bohringer) is terrified of Albert and would leave if he did not fear for his life. Albert becomes particularly jealous when he discovers that his wife is having an affair with a man who frequently eats in the restaurant, named Michael (Alan Howard). This creates a powder keg of action and reaction as the lives of the four clash in this complex film.
