When the Florida sanitarium of Judy Standish (Maureen O'Sullivan) is threatened with being taken over by gambler J. D. Morgan (Douglass Dumbrille), she turns to the help of Dr. Hugo Z. Hackenbush (Groucho Marx) to try to save it. When even Hackenbush's romancing of wealthy hypochondriac Emily Upjohn (Margaret Dumont) fails to raise funds, the fate of the sanitarium falls into the hands of sanitarium helper Tony (Chico Marx), jockey Stuffy (Harpo Marx), and singer Gil Stewart (Allan Jones), whose horse Hi Hat is going to be running in a big steeplechase race.
